Santa Fe Reporter:

Here Comes the Boom

OK, so that last pick o’ the week was about the Bandstand, and this one’s gonna be, too, and you’re just going to have to deal with it, America. This time, the rockin’ comes in the form of Boomroots Collective, Santa Fe’s very own reggae-meets-rock-meets-hip-hop-meets-funk-meets-puro-Santa kinda supergroup. That’s a lot of “meets.” Anyway, Boomroots is the kind of band that’ll make you glad weed is legal around here now, and a veritable who’s-who of Santa Fe musical talent. Mark Ortiz, aka Circumference? Yup. Artist and gallerist Alberto Zalma? Oh, yeah. Sol Bentley, aka DJ Dynamite Sol? Big time. You know these people, or should, anyway, and we can pretty much promise they’re gonna make you dance. (ADV)Santa Fe Bandstand: Boomroots Collective: 6 pm Tuesday, June 28. Free. Santa Fe Plaza, 100 Old Santa Fe Trail, ampconcerts.org https://www.sfreporter.com/arts/sfrpicks/2022/06/22/sfr-picksweek-of-june-22/

Written by Arne Bey: As I said last night: “You KILLED it brothers!”. The groove deep as they come, snare attack, pop and tone were perfection (both snares), each tom sound was beautifully tuned and tonally distinct…your technique was precise yet there was an exquisite musical and emotional “elasticity” to tempo! For example, I distinctly recall you and the entire band “downshifting” a few times into a chorus or bridge that was a few clicks slower (adagio) and then “BOOM”…you guys returned to the verse a few clicks back up in a kick-ass, full “rock steady” gallop…so free, so appropriate and musical! Use of cymbals was restrained , so when you did hit’em they lit up the moment like fireworks! And I must again give a shout out to the song you wrote titled (Brazos) that opened with a full out authentic old school Latin groove (Cuban inspired mambo?) that in an instant razor “spliced” into a massive reggae skank! Honestly, it was an exhilarating performance I will never forget. The Jamaican headliner? Yep cool…but you guys left nothing on that stage for them. I pitied them having to follow Boom Roots performance! PS the sound mix was masterful too.

The Santa VIP: Don’t forget that our very own Boomroots Collective has been voted best band in Santa Fe for their high energy reggae / ska music that makes your body move and groove.
